Foreign nationals wishing to stay in Türkiye lawfully should identify the correct type of application, submit the required documents in full and follow notifications throughout the process. A residence permit application is assessed in light of the applicant’s purpose and circumstances of stay.

Main types of residence permit

  • Short-term residence permit: May be relevant for purposes such as tourism, ownership of real estate, business connections or education programmes.
  • Family residence permit: May apply to eligible family members of a sponsor as defined by law.
  • Student residence permit: May be issued to foreign nationals studying in higher education in Türkiye.
  • Long-term residence permit: Assessed for individuals who meet the residence period and other statutory conditions.
  • Humanitarian residence permit: Available in certain limited circumstances set out in law.

What matters in an application?

The required passport and entry records, address information, health insurance, proof of income or sponsorship, and documents showing the purpose of stay may vary by application type. Inconsistent documents, failure to report a change of address or late submission of additional documents may affect the process.

What if the application is refused?

The reasons for a refusal, cancellation or decision not to extend a permit and the date of notification should be reviewed carefully. Available administrative and judicial remedies and their time limits depend on the circumstances. Prompt legal assessment after notification is therefore important.

Official information is available from the Presidency of Migration Management and the Foreigners Communication Centre (YİMER 157).

A residence permit does not replace a work permit. The right to work must be assessed separately under the applicable rules.
